Working with Disk Cleanup Tool
Disk Cleanup is a useful utility that helps you get rid of unwanted information from your hard disk and enables you free up storage space. Using the Disk Cleanup tool, you can perform the following tasks:
- Clean temporary Internet Explorer files
- Delete program files, such as ActiveX control and Java applets that are downloaded from the Internet.
- Remove unwanted program setup files.
- Empty the Recycle Bin.
- Get rid of temporary Windows files.
- Uninstall Windows components and Programs you don't use.
- Remove obsolete system restore points.
Methods to Open Disk Cleanup Tool
You can open the Disk Cleanup by using one of the following three methods.
Method 1: Open Start menu, select Run, type cleanmgr, and then select OK to run the Disk Cleanup tool.
Method 2: Open Start menu, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then select the Disk Cleanup command.
Method 3: Open Windows Explorer or My Computer, select and right-click the disk you want to clean, select Properties, and then on the General tab, select Disk Cleanup.
Steps to Clean Up Hard Disk Using Disk Cleanup
After you have opened the Disk Cleanup tool, you can perform the following tasks to free up space on your hard disk.
- On the General tab, select the check boxes of the files you want to remove, select the OK button, and then select Yes to proceed with the action.
- After the cleanup is complete, open the Disk Cleanup dialog box again and open the More Options tab.
On the More Options tab, you can perform three tasks-uninstall unwanted Windows Components, remove unwanted programs, and delete obsolete system restore points.
- To uninstall unwanted Windows components, select the Clean up button in the Windows components section to open the Windows Components Wizard.
- Clear the check boxes of the components you want to remove-if a check box is grey it implies that only some of its subcomponents are installed. To remove selected subcomponents, select the Details button, clear the check boxes of components you want to remove, and then select OK.
- Select the Next button to proceed and then select the Finish button on the Windows Components Wizard page to close the wizard.
- Next, to uninstall unwanted programs, select the Clean up button in the Installed programs section of the More Options tab on the Disk Cleanup dialog box.
- In the Add or Remove Programs dialog box that is displayed, identify the programs you want to uninstall and select the Remove or Change/Remove button to start the uninstallation process.
- Follow the instructions displayed on the screen to uninstall the selected program.
- If required, repeat the process for all programs you want to uninstall.
- To get rid on outdated System Restore point, select the Clean up button in the System Restore section of the More Options tab on the Disk Cleanup dialog box.
- Select Yes to delete all but the most recent restore point, select the OK button and then select Yes to proceed with restore point clean up action.
- Finally, select the OK button exit the Disk Cleanup dialog box.
