eabservr.exe - Easy Access Buttons

The eabserver.exe process is an unusual case. It's not a standard Windows component, but also isn't necessarily a malware application. It's specific to Compaq systems, and is the executable file that manages the Easy Access Button (EAB) functionality found on such machines. If this process is disabled, the Easy Access keys will stop working.

Obviously, this file is not needed on any non-Compaq system and will not be installed by Windows itself. If you have migrated files from an existing Compaq PC to another system, it's entirely possible you'll end up with this file as well. If this is the case, there's no reason to retain it and its entry can be disabled in the Services tab. It probably won't even run on non-Compaq hardware and won't have any effect since the hardware for which it's intended exists only on Compaq PCs.

This file is an example of a vendor-specific driver created for express use on custom hardware. If you own a Compaq PC and don't use the EA functions, you can disable this file in the Services tab without affecting other Windows operations. Simply stop the process, then set the startup option for this service to "manual" or "disabled." Remember that this will disable the EA keys completely. Normal operation can be restored by restarting the eabservr.exe in the Services tab.

Unlike Microsoft-installed system components, the eabservr.exe file generally can be found in C:\Program Files\HPQ\Quick Launch Buttons. Copies found in other locations may indicate the presence of some form of malware. Malware developers frequently make use of filenames used by legitimate software in order to escape detection.

If you're suspicious about a particular program or process, you should obtain and run a current copy of a spyware and antivirus removal tool. Be sure to retrieve the latest virus and malware signature updates to ensure all known applications can be caught and removed.
