- Start your Windows Vista computer and then in the Windows Vista logon window, select Reset Password.
- Insert or connect the media on which you saved the password reset information, and then select Next to launch the Reset Password Wizard.
- Select the drive in which your password media is located from the password key disk is in the following drive list, and then click Next.
- Enter the new password in the Type a new password and Type the password again to confirm fields.
- Enter password hint in the Type a new password hint box, click Next, and then click Finish.
- Use this new password to logon to your Windows Computer. Use the new password to log on to Windows Vista.
Steps to use an administrator account to reset your Windows Vista
If your Windows Vista user is connected to a domain, you can use the administrator account to reset the password by performing the steps listed below:
Warning: When you use administrator account to reset your password, access to all e-mail messages and encrypted files will be lost for this user account.
- Start your Windows Vista computer and log on using the administrator username and password.
- OpenStart menu, in the Search box type lusrmgr.msc , and then press Enter to open theLocal Users and Groups window .
- Expand Local Users and Groups.
If prompted provide the password for the administrator user account.
- Next, in the Users folder, right-click the user account for which you need to reset the password.
- Select the Set Password command, and then select Proceed.
- Type the new password in the New password box and the Confirm password fields, and then click the OK button twice.
- Restart your Windows Vista computer, and then attempt to log on using the new password.
Note: You cannot perform the above tasks on Windows Vista Starter, Windows Vista Home Basic, and Windows Vista Home Premium computers.
