No Permission to Change Password

You may be prompted to change your password when you try to log on to a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 or a Microsoft Windows Server 2000 domain and the following error message may display when you try to do so:

You do not have permission to change your password.

Cause of the Error

This error usually occurs when all of the following are true:

  • The NT4Emulator value is enabled on the Windows Server 2003 domain controller.
  • The client or the user computer has the Windows XP Service Pack 1 operating system on it.
  • The password you supply, does not meets the specified security recruitments.

For example, the error will generate when the first two conditions exist, and you attempt to change your password to something that is already there in your account’s password history.

Workaround Method

You can workaround this problem by providing an absolutely new and unique password that you have not used earlier when you are prompted to change the existing password.
