How to Submit Suspected Spyware and Virus to Microsoft

To compress and archive virus or spyware files and submit them to Microsoft, perform the steps listed below:

 

  1. Open Windows Explorer, right-click in a blank area on an open folder, select New, and then select the Compressed (zipped) Folder command.
  2. Type the name for your zip folder and then press Enter.
    • If you are submitting virus file(s) provide the name as fp-virus.zip.
    • If you are submitting spyware file(s) provide the name as fn-spyware.zip.
  3. Navigate to the location where the suspected virus or spyware files are located, and then drag them to the fp-virus.zip or fn-spyware.zip folder.
  4. Next, double-click on the folder to open it, open File menu, and then select Add a Password.
  5. Type infected in the Password box that is displayed.
  6. Type infected in the Confirm Password box.
  7. Open your e-mail program.
  8. Compose a new e-mail, in the To line type the following e-mail address:
  9. Type the subject:
    • For virus files type the subject as False Positive: Virus.
    • For spyware files type the subject as False Negative: Spyware
  10. In the message body, include the following details:
    • Why do you think that the file(s) are not virus/spyware infected?
    • Results of any other application and the name of the application you used to ensure that the file(s) are not infected.
    • Information about the source from where you downloaded the file.
  11. Finally, attach the fp-virus.zip/fn-spyware.zip file to your message and send the e-mail to Microsoft.
