These error messages may display even when no other communication program on your computer is using the modem. Moreover, even if logging is enabled the Modemlog.txt file may not be created.
Cause of the Error
This problem occurs when one of the following conditions is true:
- Your computer comprises an internal modem and the resources the internal modem is configured to use do not match the serial port resource allocation (that is used by the modem) in the Device Manager.
- The “unimodem.vxd” file is missing or damaged.
- Another communication program is running the background.
- The modem port is not closed correctly.
Workaround Methods
To workaround this problem and prevent the errors, use the method that is appropriate in your situation.
Method 1: Verify that the Modem Resource Settings and the Settings of the Serial Port it is Using Match
You can determine the resources your modem is configured to use by default by going through the modem’s documentation. In order to check the serial port settings for the modem, do the following:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select System and then open the Device Manager tab.
- Double-click Ports (COM & LPT) to expand its branch.
- Select the COM port that your modem is using, select Properties, and then open the Resources tab.
Note : To determine the serial port your modem is configured to use, select your modem in Device Manager, select Properties , and then open the Modem tab.
If the resource settings of the modem and the serial port do not match, use the Device Manager options to manually change the modem settings to match the serial port settings that it is using.
Method 2: Replace the Unimodem.vxd File
- Open Windows Explorer and open the C:\Windows\System folder to ensure that the Unimodem.vxd file is not damaged or missing.
- If this file is damaged or missing, perform the following steps to replace the missing file:
- Open Start menu, select Run, type sfc, and then press Enter.
- Select the Extract one file from installation disk option.
- Next, in the Specify the system file you would like to restore box, type C:\Windows\System\ Unimodem.vxd .
Note: Here, C is the system drive in which your Windows is installed.
- Select Start, select Browse located next to the Restore from box, and then navigate to the Windows installation files.
Note: By default, installation files of Windows 98 and Windows 98 SE OEM version are saved on your hard disk in the C:\Cabs folder. If you have the full retail version or the upgrade version, then you need to insert the Windows 98 installation CD in the CD-drive and then locate the installation files on it.
Method 3: Close All Running Communication Programs
To check if any other communication program is running on your computer or not and to close them—if they are running, do the following:
- Press the CTRL + ALT + DELETE key combination to display the Close Program dialog box.
- Scan through and exit any communication program running on the system by selecting the program and then clicking the End Task button.
- Repeat the above steps to close all unnecessary programs running on the system.
Method 4: Disable and then re-enable the modem.
- Open Control Panel.
- Select System and then open the Device Manager tab.
- Double-click Modem, select your modem, and then select Properties.
- On theGeneral tab of the properties dialog box, select Disable in this hardware profile.
- Close all windows open on the system and then restart your system.
- Next, open the properties dialog box of your modem in Device Manager again, select Enable Device, and then select OK.
- InControl Panel, double-click Modems.
- On the Diagnostics tab of the Modems Properties dialog box, select More Information to ensure the modem information displays.
