How to use Earlier Versions of Microsoft Office Programs to Open and Save Office 2007 Files

The files in the following Microsoft Office 2007 programs are saved in the Office Open XML Formats:

  • Microsoft Office Excel 2007
  • Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2007
  • Microsoft Office Word 2007

Due to the inclusion of these new formats, it is not possible to open the files created in these Office 2007 programs in earlier Office versions. In order to resolve this issue, Microsoft has released a compatibility pack that you can install on computer that are running Microsoft Office 2003, Microsoft Office XP, or Microsoft Office 2000 programs.

After the compatibility pack is installed, you can easily create, edit, open, and save files in the Office Open XML Format, which is more robust than the earlier format.
