Error 25090: Problem with Office Source Engine

You may receive an error message similar to the one given below when you try to launch the Microsoft Office 2007 or Microsoft Office 2003 program:

Error 25090. Office Setup encountered a problem with the Office Source Engine, system error: -2147023836. Please open SETUP.CHM and look for "Office Source Engine" for information on how to resolve this problem.

Cause of the Error

This error occurs when:

  • loadTOCNode(1, 'cause'); Office was installed twice on the same computer—most commonly by two different people.
  • The AllUsers="" parameter was used during both the installations to set the installation to be used only by the user account that installed it.
  • During both the installations, even though prompted, users did not remove the setup files copied locally after the setup is complete.
  • One of the two installations was removed after a while.

Resolution Steps

  1. Insert Microsoft Office 2003 or Microsoft Office 2007 CD in the CD or DVD drive of your computer.
  2. Usually the setup program starts automatically, if it does not, open Windows Explorer, locate Setup.exe on the CD, and double-click on it.
  3. When the Setup window is displayed, cancel the Setup process,.
  4. Provideappropriate responses to the messages displayed while exiting the Setup process.

When you start the Setup, the conditions generating the error 29090 are fixed. This is the reason why you don’t need to complete the entire Setup process.
