How to Fix Problem With Outlook Express Hyperlinks after Internet Explorer 7 Upgrade

After you upgrade your current Internet Explorer to Internet Explorer 7, you may encounter following problems when you click on the hyperlinks included in email messages from Microsoft Outlook Express:

  • The hyperlinks fail to work normally.
  • Internet Explorer does not starts up to open the required Web page.

This problem usually occurs when the HyperText Transfer Protocol is not correctly registered on the system. You can rectify the issue by following one of the methods discussed below.

Method 1 : Rectify the settings for Hypertext Transfer Protocol and HyperText Transfer Protocol with Privacy.

  • Open the My Computer window.
  • Display the Tools menu, select the Folder Options command, and then open the File Types tab.
  • Browse through the Registered file types list to locate (NONE) URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol.
  • Select this entry and then click on the Advanced button located at the bottom of the Folder Options dialog box.
  • In the Edit File Type dialog box that is displayed, select the Edit button.
  • Note down the values that already exist in the fields included in this box—required to restore current settings if the resolution method fails.
  • Verify and add the following values in the fields on this dialog box, if the current entries are incorrect or missing.
    1. Action : open
    2. Application used to perform the action : "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" -nohome
    3. Use DDE : Select the check box
    4. DDE Message : "%1",,-1,0,,,,
    5. Application : IExplore
    6. DDE Application Not Running : Leave this blank
    7. Topic : WWW_OpenURL
  • Select OK twice to apply your changes and exit the Edit File Type dialog box.
  • Next, select the (NONE) URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol with Privacy item from the Registered file types list and click the Advanced button.
  • Here, select the Edit button and then verify that the settings of this option are same as the settings of (NONE) URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol.
  • After you are done, exit the Folder Options dialog box and then check if the hyperlinks now work in Outlook Express.

If you still experience the issue, use Method 2.

Method 2: Change the default browser setting.

Use this method if the first method fails to fix your problem.

  • In the My Computer window, open Tools menu, select Folder Options, and then select the File Types tab.
  • Select (NONE) URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol and then select the Advanced button.
  • Select the Edit button on the Edit File Type box, and then in the Application used to perform action box, replace the value –nohome with %1.

Note : When you launch Internet Explorer 7 after modifying this setting, you may be asked to set the browser as your default browser. When prompted, you need to select No, because selecting Yes will again change %1 to –nohome.

  • Select OK twice to return to the Folder Options dialog box.
  • Now, select the (NONE) URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol with Privacy item and repeat the above steps to replace the value –nohome with %1 for this item also.
  • Apply your changes and exit the Folder Options dialog box.
  • Open Outlook Express and test a hyperlink.
