Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005: Files with ".corrupt" or ".recovering" Extensions Appear in the Recorded TV Folder

When working on a Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 computer, you may notice accumulation of files with ".corrupt" or a ".recovering" file name extension in the Recorded TV folder.

When you check it, you will see that these files are large in size and you cannot delete them by using the Windows XP Media Center user interface.

Moreover, when attempting to play this file, you may encounter the following error message:

Cannot play video.

The file type is not recognized and cannot be played. Either the correct codec (a file that compresses/decompresses audio or video) is not installed or the file is corrupt.

Cause of the Error

Files with ".corrupt" or”.recovering” extensions are usually created in the Recorded TV folder when you start/stop Windows XP Media Center services when recording is on.

Your Media Center computer attempts to recover any usable data and creates a file with file name extension “.dvr-ms”. However, even after the file with “.dvr-ms” is created, the files with ".corrupt" or “.recovering” extensions may still exist in the folder.

Workaround Steps

You can work around this problem by manually deleting these unwanted files. You can delete them, by performing the following steps:

  1. Open the My Computer window.
  2. Open the Shared Documents folder and then select the Recorded TV folder.
  3. Press the Ctrl key and select all file with ".corrupt" or ".recovering" extensions.
  4. Press the Delete key and then select Yes to remove these files from your system.
