Unable to Use Windows Photo Gallery or Windows Explorer to Add Metadata to a Canon RAW File

On a Windows Vista computer, when you try to add metadata to a Cannon RAW file with “.tif” file name extension, the file may be reported as corrupt.

Cause of the Problem

The problem occurs, in the following conditions:

  • The Canon RAW file to which you are trying to add the metadata was created by a 1D camera model or a 1Ds camera model from Canon, Inc.
  • You not installed the Canon RAW codec on your Windows Vista computer.

The 1D camera model or the 1Ds camera model create files that appear as standard TIFF files to your Windows Vista computer. This is the reason why, the Windows Imaging Component invokes the standard TIFF codec on your computer to handle the files. However, the Canon RAW codec interprets these RAW files differently. Therefore, the existing TIFF codec on your system is unable to correctly handle the RAW files.

Workaround Method

This is a known problem and Microsoft is working toward creating a hotfix to prevent Canon RAW files from being handled by the standard TIFF codec, usually resulting in data loss.

Canon is also creating a Canon RAW codec for Windows Vista computers. This codec will enable you to use the Windows Photo Gallery to add metadata to RAW files created using a 1D model camera or a 1Ds model camera.

To work around this problem, do not do the following tasks using the Windows Photo Gallery or Windows Explorer:

  • Import Canon RAW files
  • Add metadata to Canon RAW files with .tif file name extension and were files are created by a 1D camera model or by a 1Ds camera model.
